Repaired weld run on the bridge beam after rework

Overview

SPI yard repair on a bridge beam where the previous weld had failed. I was brought in to remove the defective weld, prep the joint, and re-weld the section so the beam could return to the repair programme.

Scope & Methods

  • Gouged and ground out the failed weld to clean parent metal and reveal the inclusion.
  • Multi-pass weld build-up with controlled heat input and blending to profile.
  • Final dress and visual checks before handover to the yard team.

Highlights

Repair Quality

  • Cleaned out the defect fully to ensure the repair tied into sound steel.
  • Consistent bead profile and fusion across the full joint length.

Yard Support

  • Turnaround kept the beam in the repair schedule without delaying the build.
  • Work completed with minimal disruption to the SPI yard flow.

Outcomes

  • Failed weld removed and replaced with a sound structural repair.
  • Weld was NDT inspected and passed.
  • Beam returned to the bridge repair programme without rework.
  • Client received clean, documented finish for inspection.
