HS2 Piling Support - Keller

Rapid on-site maintenance coverage • Preventive schedule improvements

HS2 piling site with rigs maintained on shift

Overview

On-site mechanical support for Keller during HS2 piling. I handled rapid fault-finding and repair on rigs and ancillary equipment, and introduced a preventive maintenance schedule tuned to drilling cycles. The site achieved the fastest drilling rate on the programme and finished ahead of schedule, with management later asking how to replicate the approach elsewhere.

Specs & Scope

  • Equipment: piling rigs, power packs, desanders/desilters, agitators, pumps, tooling.
  • Systems: hydraulics (hoses, valves, pumps), electrical sensors and limit switches, wear parts.
  • Coverage: day/evening shifts with call-out; on-rig spares and hose kits.
  • Documentation: service logs, fault trees, handover notes, parts usage tracking.

Maintenance Schedule Highlights

  • Daily pre-shift checks: leaks, hose condition, pins/bushes, teeth and wear pads, oil levels, filter status.
  • Tooling changeover SOPs reduced idle time between piles; staging area and slings pre-rigged.
  • Standardised spares kit per rig: hose and fitting assortments, sensors, relays, clamps, cutting edges.
  • Issue log with root-cause tagging to prevent repeat faults; quick-reference fixes laminated at each rig.

Outcomes

  • Fastest drilling site on the HS2 programme during the period.
  • Completed ahead of schedule.
  • Approach requested by management to inform other sites.
