Overview

Bridge extension for a contractor requiring new reinforcement welded to existing bars under coded procedures. I planned the sequencing, set up safe working, and executed the welds, completing the scope in 2 days against 4 planned. All welds passed NDT, and the client commended the organisation and communication.

Scope & Methods

  • Coded welding to tie new bars into existing reinforcement per approved WPS/WPQR.
  • Joint prep and fit-up: cleaned to bright metal, aligned, and controlled root gaps.
  • Heat control with monitored preheat/interpass temperature and controlled cooling.
  • Access planning to avoid congestion and maintain cover requirements.
  • Workface organisation with staged consumables and QA sign-offs at hold points.

NDT & QA

  • 100% visual inspection plus MT/PT as required by the inspection and test plan.
  • All welds accepted on first pass; no repairs requested.
  • Weld maps and traceability maintained with heat numbers and batch records logged.

Safety & Controls

  • Hot works permit and fire watch with extinguishers at point of use.
  • Edge protection and exclusion zones established around the work area.

Outcomes

  • Completed in 2 days vs 4 planned.
  • All welds passed NDT; zero rework.
  • Client commendation for communication and site organisation.
