Foundations • Structural steel • Galvanised pens • Plumbing • Fencing & landscaping

New bear house at Knowsley Safari Park showing steel frame and blockwork

Overview

End-to-end delivery of a new bear enclosure at Knowsley Safari Park. I set out and poured the foundations, fabricated the structural steel frame, and managed erection. I coordinated bricklayers for blockwork and roofers for cladding, then built enclosed galvanised steel and mesh pens inside, complete with roofs. Plumbing covered two internal drinkers, one external drinker and tap, plus a plumbed sink. Outside, I installed perimeter fencing, completed landscaping, and fitted new bear beds. The project finished on time for the animals' arrival and later featured on TV in a park documentary.

Scope & Methods

  • Foundations: excavation, formwork, reinforcement placement, and concrete pour.
  • Steel frame: shop fabrication, lift planning, on-site erection, and alignment checks.
  • Blockwork & cladding: coordinated trades to maintain programme and interfaces.
  • Internal pens: fabricated steel frames with welded mesh, hot-dip galvanised for durability, fully roofed for containment.
  • Plumbing: two internal drinkers, one external drinker/tap, and a sink; pressure-tested and protected pipe runs.
  • External works: perimeter fencing, landscaping, and finishing details.

Outcomes

  • Delivered on time to meet the animal introduction date.
  • Client sign-off with positive feedback on organisation and finish.
  • Project and handover featured on TV in a park documentary.
